Lamar County Sheriff’s Office Issues Warning on Debit Card Phone Scam

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a recent phone scam in which callers pretend to represent a bank or credit union. The scammers claim that the victim’s debit card has been “compromised” and then attempt to trick people into sharing sensitive financial information.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the callers typically ask for debit card numbers, PINs, or other personal details. Officials stress that no legitimate bank or credit union will ever request this information over the phone.

“If scammers get access to your information, they will quickly use it to purchase money orders, gift cards, or other items that are difficult to trace,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its advisory.

Residents are urged to remain cautious, hang up on suspicious calls, and never provide financial details to unsolicited callers.

If you believe you’ve been targeted—or if you have already shared your card information—you are encouraged to contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.
