Lamar County’s First Responders BBQ Challenge set for Saturday, Oct. 4

Fire up those pits—Lamar County’s inaugural First Responders BBQ Challenge is happening Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Lamar County Fairgrounds, with proceeds supporting a local resident battling breast cancer. This family-friendly cook-off will serve BBQ to the public from 12–2 p.m.

Key details for teams

  • Entry: Free for contestants (no professional teams).
  • Cooking methods: No pellet or electric cookers permitted.
  • Meat requirement: Bring 60 lbs total (any combination of brisket, ribs, pork, and chicken).
  • Meat check: Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. on-site.
  • Food safety & cleanliness: All meat must be prepared and served at your team site on Oct. 4. Keep your area clean and have a 5-gallon bucket with bleach water and a rag available.
  • Judging: Begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Public tasting

  • BBQ will be available to attendees 12–2 p.m.—come hungry and cheer on your favorite first responder teams while supporting a neighbor in need.
